Wilderness Day Trip

For our community project we participated with the Wilderness Inquiry, a wildlife organization located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Some of their youth staff were traveling around the country promoting outdoor adventure through kayaking in some our countries greatest bodies of water. For their visit to the Washington D.C. area, students came to kayak on the Anacostia River. Students were also introduced to animals such as the North American Eagle and owl.

As volunteers, we were able to help prepare the students for kayaking. As the students rushed from their bus towards the paddles and life jackets, we helped them pick out the right size. We then helped the Wilderness Inquiry staff usher them into a circle, were the students played games utilizing their paddles, feet, and hands.  After their trip was over, we helped them put their jackets and paddles away before ending with a game and introduction of some neat wildlife animals.

This community service activity was great because we were able to interact with the students outside of the classroom. We liked seeing the kids work together to row the boats and their excitement at being able to do something with the outdoors. We thought that the activity related to our team name because the kids really had to work together and be nice to each other to share the paddles and be able to work in the boat and get it moving. The students were also great because we know how exciting field trips can be but everyone was kind to each other and wanted to work together so that everyone could have a good time.  What was most enjoyable was getting to interact with the children (some who visiting a national park for the first time) and sharing the experience with them. Kindness is not just in what you say, but also in what you do. It was great to be able to give back to our local community and see how it is positively affecting our future generation of leaders!
